How to Safely Use an Oven

If you have recently purchased a new single oven for your kitchen, you are sure to be excited and eager to use it. However, before you set about to bake and cook delicious treats in your shiny new single oven, there are a few important safety tips you need to keep in mind to avoid any unfortunate accidents. Ovens burn at very high temperatures and so you need to be extra careful when putting in and taking out dishes, turning the heat on and off and so forth.

1. It is important that you do not crowd the unit. One specific model has a particular cooking capacity and filling it up beyond that will make your cooking less efficient and increase the risk of some accident due to spillage and things as such.

2. Bought the oven but do not have oven mitts? Do not even install the oven yet, get the mitts first. Many people do not realize how dangerous it can be to handle dishes and the door without the mitts. Even when you are placing a cool tray inside or simply opening the flap to check on a turkey of cake, make sure you have the mitts on. You never know when your hand might slip and the skin on your hand could be burned severely from the hot rods.

3. Avoid handling and changing the position of the racks in the oven after you have placed food inside to be cooked. You might be in a rush while adjusting the racks and this could also result in painful skin burns.

4. Clear the area and get yourself some space when you are about to take a cooked and hot dish out of the oven. You do not want distractions around you that might make you panic or rush because this could lead to spillage and accidents. If there are children in the house make sure they are not around when you are removing a hot dish from the oven, close the flap as quickly as you can and in case there is some spillage, mop it us as soon as you can.

5. Do not neglect the cleaning of your oven. Over time because of usage, grease tends to build up in the oven and this is the best time to use the self cleaning feature of units. This is important because built up grease may catch fire while cooking. Keeping these simple things in mind while working with the oven is sure to protect you and your family from any accidents.
